Deadpool and Wolverine box office – update : Morning, 29 July,2024

“Deadpool and Wolverine” has stormed into theaters with unprecedented success, smashing records both domestically and globally. With a staggering worldwide opening of $444.1 million and a remarkable $211 million in domestic earnings, the film has set a new benchmark. It surpasses the previous record held by “Deadpool” from 2016, which garnered $264 million worldwide (excluding China) and $132.4 million domestically.

This latest entry has achieved the biggest global debut since “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which had a similar performance of $439 million when adjusted for current rates. The film’s opening weekend saw impressive figures with $96 million from Friday previews, $61.5 million on Saturday, and $53.5 million on Sunday. Internationally, it accumulated $233 million in its opening frame.

In terms of domestic attendance, “Deadpool and Wolverine” recorded 13.6 million admissions. A feat not matched since July 2023 when “Barbie” reached 13.1 million. Only “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” with 13.8 million and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” with over 20 million have had more post-pandemic.

OVERSEAS BOX OFFICE

Breaking records abroad, the film achieved significant numbers in several countries, with the China leading at $24 million. Followed by UK at $22.5 million. The TOP overseas box office figures: China ($24M), UK ($22.5M) ,Mexico ($19M), Australia ($13.3M), Germany ($10.4M), Brazil ($10.3M), India ($10.1M), France ($9.6M), South Korea ($8.7M), Italy ($7.5M), Spain ($7M), and Argentina ($5.84M).

“Deadpool and Wolverine” has also set multiple records, including the biggest domestic opening for Ryan Reynolds, surpassing the $132.4 million record set by the first “Deadpool.” Hugh Jackman’s highest domestic opening is now eclipsed, with this film outperforming “X-Men: The Last Stand” from 2006, which held a record of $102.7 million. For filmmaker Shawn Levy, it surpasses the $54.1 million opening of “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.”

This film has achieved the highest July opening weekend of all time domestically, overtaking “The Lion King”. Which had a $191.8 million opening. Additionally, it marks the 34th consecutive Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) release to debut at number one in the domestic box office. The film has also registered the highest domestic opening weekend of 2024. And the highest since “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in December 2021, with a $260.1 million opening.

Other notable achievements include being the sixth highest domestic opening weekend of all time, the sixth highest opening day at the domestic box office with $96 million, and the fourth highest superhero opening weekend behind “Avengers: Endgame,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” It is also the second highest opening weekend for a third installment, trailing only “Avengers: Endgame.”

Remarks:

Disney, which has now released the top title for May (“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”), June (“Inside Out 2”), and July (“Deadpool and Wolverine”), continues to dominate the box office. “Deadpool and Wolverine” has outpaced the opening weekend of “Jurassic World” from 2015, which earned $208.8 million, and now falls behind only “Avengers: Endgame,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” in terms of top opening weekends.

Evident in their Hall H session, Marvel is out to extinguish the term “superhero fatigue” from the dictionary, and uphold their reputation as the only film franchise in history to count $30 billion-plus at the global box office. Not only is this evident in Disney/Marvel’s rallying of the R-rated superhero movie, but also in bringing the fan-loved Russo Brothers back for “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”; filmmakers who know how to handle epic-cliff-hanging storytelling with multiple characters.
