‘KALKI 2898 AD’ Shines Bright
Director: Nag Ashwin
Cast: Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Disha Patani
In stark contrast, ‘KALKI 2898 AD’ has been the shining star of the Indian box office this year. It got a great word of mouth and rest is history. Starring Prabhas, the film has grossed an astonishing ₹1000 Crores in just 16 days and its only the 5th Indian title to do so. And is on track to finish at ₹1100 Crores. The movie’s strong daily performance and positive word of mouth have solidified its status as a blockbuster. It has already got passed the ₹694 Crores in INDIA and should cross ₹700 Crores by tomorrow or early thursday morning. Its a comeback for Prabhas and a delight for this fans after a sequence of poor movies. Kalki is now a universe and should continue further.
‘Indian 2’ Struggles Despite High Expectations
Director: Shankar
Cast: Kamal Haasan, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Siddharth
‘Indian 2’, directed by the legendary Shankar and starring the iconic Kamal Haasan, has grossed around ₹126 Crores in its first 5 days. However, the movie is now on track to finish with a total of ₹160-175 Crores, which is significantly lower than initial projections. The dynamics seem to have reversed, and it’s not performing well even in Tamil Nadu, where it was expected to gross at least ₹100 Crores.
Despite the star power and high expectations, ‘Indian 2’ has turned out to be a major disappointment. With a budget reported to be between ₹200-300 Crores (likely leaning towards the higher end due to extended filming delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic), the movie’s lackluster performance is a financial disaster. The concern now shifts to the upcoming third part of the franchise, set for release in 2025, which faces an uncertain future unless it delivers gripping, fresh content.
Other notable : ‘Sarfira’ Fails to Impress
Director: Sudha Kongara
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Radhika Madan
Another notable disaster is Akshay Kumar’s ‘Sarfira’. The film has grossed only ₹23 Crores to date and is struggling to draw audiences to theaters, with its first Monday earnings not even reaching ₹3 Crores. With a budget estimated at ₹80-100 Crores, ‘Sarfira’ is expected to end its theatrical run at around ₹40-50 Crores. Despite a decent word of mouth, it seems viewers are more inclined to watch it on OTT platforms rather than in cinemas.
